As we age collagen gradually disappears from our skin leaving lines and furrows. Each time we smile or frown we create these lines in our face. This is unavoidable and is part of the ageing process. There are however, a number of treatments available to reduce the appearance of these lines and prevent them from increasing, botulinum toxin injection is the most popular treatment among them.
Botulinum toxin (BOTOX) is a protein that temporarily weakens the muscles that gather your skin into folds, making it crease-proof enough to prevent wrinkles to be appeared or worsened. A trained doctor can pinpoint which muscles to be weakened without causing any complications.
What can BOTOX do for you?Reducing lines, wrinkles:
Does it hurt during the procedure? The treatment only takes 5-10 minutes, and is relatively painless. Numbing cream can be applied to your skin before treatment, but the needles are so tiny that this can be done without any anaesthesia. Many patients have commented that the sensation is similar to acupuncture or eyebrow waxing.
Are the treatments safe? There are literally hundreds of studies showing that it is perfectly safe as long as it is used in the recommended amounts. We only use a tiny amount to treat wrinkles - less than a tenth of the amount used for treating conditions like cerebral palsy.
Are there any side effects? Side effects are not very common with Botox treatments, and very importantly even if they occur there are no long-term side effects whatsoever. For about one hour after the treatment the patient may have small red bumps at the site of the injections, but these fade within 1 hour, really making this a “lunchtime” treatment. Headaches, slight bruising, tightness and heaviness are rare side effects but all of these usually resolve within a matter of days.
How long do the effects last? The results of the treatment become apparent after 3-7 days, and the effects should last about 4-6 months. If the patient returns for regular follow up treatments, the muscles reduce in size gradually and in time the effects can last much longer.
